The Seattle-Post Intelligencer, originally founded during the Civil War era, is ceasing paper publication today. Seattle now joins much of the country in being a single daily newspaper town, for now.
This event led me to the following thoughts:
Sometimes I wonder where the critical reading and critical thinking skills of we Americans have gone.
Today we are such "short attention span theatre" adherents (anyone get the reference??), such adult ADD'rs,
so easily distracted.
I strongly believe that (aside from isolated cases of fraud), most of our current national problems are sourced to my lead hypothesis.
We, both as individuals and as institutions, don't reason or read critically. Lest you think this is a "holier than thou" blog, I have to recognize in myself my own lapses in critical reading or thinking.
First, take a look at how many people and institutions have "missed the mark". I look at the bond rating agencies. I look at investment advisors, organizations, & individuals taken in by Ponzi schemes. I see the "parrot-ing" of internet rumours, hoaxes and legends.
ALL of these behaviors can, in large part, be attributed to the lack of critical reading and thinking. The bond rating agencies failed to critically research and review company data before issuing AAA ratings. Individuals and investment advisors didn't seek independent and steep analysis of the depositories for their life savings. And don't get me started about the emails we get from our well-intentioned friends who pass on garbage that's purported to be The Truth.
For our nation, our cities, communities and homes to regain our momentum, we all need to commit ourselves to take the time to ask questions and think for ourselves.
And in my humble opinion, as we lose daily newspapers, for all of their shortcomings, we are taking steps backwards in the mission to read and think critically.
